Subject-specific costs for undergraduate students

Tuition fees will provide access to all the usual teaching and learning equipment; however, there may be additional costs such as materials and equipment that are associated with your course.

The outline costs indicated below show requirements and non-mandatory costs that may be associated with the course. In order that you can complete the tasks and creative work involved in your studies, you will be required to purchase a basic range of materials and tools – details of which will be supplied during induction in the form of a Kit-list. In addition to art supplies, students will also need to pay for some costs involved in end of year exhibitions and trips. Be assured that we always strive to keep any additional student costs to an absolute minimum and provide adequate notice of any expenses that may need to be paid.

Course Costs include the following items:

Please note: Optional residential trips may be organised at key points throughout the programme. The cost of these will vary depending on location.

Course books and materials £100 approx. per annum. You will be provided with reading lists for each module; some modules have a core textbook which can be purchased. In most cases the submission of project /module folders for assessment will be digital and uploaded to the VLE Canvas but at the point of exhibiting students will be required to present hardcopies. The desired hard copy format is an A3 poly display landscape folder with 20 transparent plastic sleeves. These can be purchased online for approx. £8.19 Presentation Portfolio – You will need to buy an A3 Landscape Prat Pampa spiral display portfolio to record and showcase the outcomes of your coursework these can be purchased online £40-£60.

Specialist Digital Equipment – You may want to invest in your own digital equipment to use outside of the studio, including specialist hardware such as a MacBook laptop approx. cost £1,299. The licencing of the Adobe Creative Suite software is free for personal use outside of the University. You have full access to the suite of computers and software on-site throughout the week. It is advised students invest in a portable hard drive to back up all their digital work which retail at around £50. Specialist Materials and Equipment – This includes sketch book, layout pad, ink, drawing equipment, scalpels/blades, metal rulers etc.

On average, costs per module should range between £50-£100, however this may rise to between £100-£200 for practical modules at Level 5 and 6. This is because you will need to print professional standard prints for your portfolio and produce realistic dummies and prototypes of 3D design work for both display purposes and print publications.

Parking – Parking is available for free at the University and Professional Development campus, it is advised that you should come into the university to use facilities outside of your timetabled hours as part of your self-directed study.

Course Trips – Course trips can occur two or three times every year at each level and while they are often module-specific, they are optional. Local trips to galleries and agencies usually range from between £40-50, depending on the mode of transport and destination.

We sometimes run an international trip; the cost of such trips is dependent on destination, length of trip and accommodation. In previous years we have organised trips to Barcelona, Rome, Venice at £350 – £400 for three nights and four days including flight, transfers, accommodation and breakfast. Excursions are charged separately. Long-distance destinations to New York or Singapore could cost anywhere from £900 – £1,500 for flight and accommodation. If you would like to participate in these trips, there is an option for payment to be made by instalments over the academic year.

Conferences – We encourage you to attend creative industry conferences but, as with trips, this is optional. There are two main conferences for Graphic Design in the UK D&AD New Blood Festival in London and New Designers in London. Ticket admission plus day return rail travel from Bury St Edmunds approx. £80. Competition entry fees. You are encouraged to enter your work for both national and international competitions. Entries usually cost around £35 – £40 but fees are often cheaper. If you win, you will be invited to attend an awards ceremony in London and you will need to cover the cost of your travel and overnight stay.

Degree show – There is an expectation that at Levels 5 and 6 that you fund your Degree Show/ exhibition. You should aim to budget a maximum of £100 to cover the cost of printing of your hanger banner and a contribution towards the cost of the printed catalogue. The hire of local exhibition space is covered by the institution.

Internship expenditure – There is an internship module at Level 5 and you are expected to fund your transport to your placement unless the company is prepared to cover some of your commute expenses. These placements are usually located no more than a 30mile radius of the campus. printing/copying at the start of the academic year. Storage – we recommend 1-2TB to store solutions, reports, etc.; students will benefit from using SSD technology in terms of speed (approx. £65-£150+)

Headphones (approx. £25 – £100) – where certain modules are taken, students are advised to purchase a set of headphones to test audio.

Game Controller (approx. £20 – £50) – use of a standard gamepad is common during design, development and testing.

Electronic Prototyping Equipment – some modules may require low-cost electronic prototyping equipment and components for experimentation at home, although these are available on campus (approx. £35 – £75)

Esports Apparel – students may choose to purchase esports shirts, jackets, etc., in our team design (approx. £20 – £55 per item)

Computer – It is recommended and common for students to use their own computer, although not essential. The required specification for this would partly depend on the modules chosen and given pace of the development of technology and changing value of equipment. It is not possible to put an exact cost on this, but this may be in the region of £750 – £1500+. The course team will be happy to discuss this with you.

Events – optional attendance. Students have previously visited computer games events, including EGX (approx. £20 – £70 for tickets plus travel) and the UKie student conference (travel costs only as UKie membership is paid by the IIT course). The development Conference is a UK games conference and students are encouraged to attend (approx. £100 – £385 for the conference sessions, depending on early booking and number of days attending, or a free pass for the expo only; this does not include any travel and accommodation). Attendance at virtual and in-person industry events covering various aspect of IIT may also be organised, dependent on tickets, travel and accommodation.

Outside of course fees, there are some additional costs associated with the completion of the programme at your discretion. You will have access to specialist resources but may wish to invest in your own computing, hardware and software to enable you to work independently at home. You will be advised about additional purchases by the course team, noting the development of technology and changing value of equipment.

You are required to undertake personal therapy, which cost approximately £50/hour for a minimum of 40 hours. This can be undertaken at any point during the three years of study. As well as this, please expect to pay around £50/hour for individual supervision once working in placement commences (minimum of 1.5 hours of supervision required for every 8 client hours in training). Your chosen therapist must be an accredited member of the BACP or a registered member of the UKCP.

Annual BACP Student Membership costs £80. Independent travel to work placement can cost up to £450 per annum. Course books and materials may cost £120 per annum. Insurance £30 – £50 per annum.

It is also a requirement that you obtain an enhanced DBS, which is £44. We recommend students obtain a quality SD/HD card to enable you to record presentations/group activities, these are £20 – £40 Approx.

Enhanced DBS – the cost is approx’ £60 for an Enhanced DBS. We also recommend that students sign up for the Update Service once they have received their DBS, the cost of this service is approx’ £14 per year. Students may also incur additional costs travelling to work placements in Years 2 and 3.

While students often have access to teaching and learning spaces on campus outside of scheduled sessions, purchasing a personal computer is recommended. The cost varies depending on the model chosen.

An enhanced DBS check, costing £44, may be necessary depending on your work placement plans.

The HND Course requires an element of work-based learning. There will be associated costs with travel for the work-based / placement elements to meet the requirements of this unit over the year(s) of study.
