Kerry Whiting: ‘If a friend was thinking about studying here, I’d say just do it!’

I’m loving learning about research methods and the different psychological theories.

Our classes are quite small, it feels so much more personal, and you have the chance to learn not only from your tutors but also from your fellow students’ experiences. We also have the chance to collaborate with other degree courses, which broadens your knowledge.

I have an innate passion for the subject. I’m fascinated by human behaviour and ‘what makes us, us’. I’m a naturally curious person and the fact that there are no definitive answers in debates such as ‘nature or nurture’ really ignites my interest.

It’s so close to where I live, I don’t have to travel at all. I can stay at home, close to my friends and family. I have a crazy busy life and studying here just makes it manageable for me.

Because the university is so much smaller than most it was much less daunting after being out of study for a few years. I left school without any GSCEs and I didn’t take my A Levels until I was 21, so I had a slow start. But the whole environment and culture here is so supportive it made it so much less daunting.

I recently had an ADHD diagnosis, and I was struggling with my mental health. I was having a really hard time adjusting to the diagnosis, but I was offered a great deal of support from the personal support tutors and my course tutors and that made me determined to succeed.

Staying on top of everything despite everything that was going on in my life. That’s made me feel really good about myself and given me a real sense of pride. This achievement has made me realise I can let go of all the stress I was holding onto. I have confidence in my capabilities and now I’m going to keep working hard and see where it leads me.

That I’m capable, and getting a degree education is for me – I didn’t think it was possible. The course has given me real insight into the human condition and this makes me feel acceptance and compassion. It’s inspiring.

I want to go into forensic psychology research.

Studying here has helped me consolidate my ideas for the future. I’ve not only learnt about my subject but also about valuable skills like research, experiments and reporting. You get the chance to experience exactly how your subject is applied in the real world.

Fun, inspiring and vibrant.

I’d say just do it! You’ll have an in-depth learning experience, in a unique environment. You won’t be just a number. You’ll learn from your fellow students and tutors. You’ll help each other with support and understanding, you’ll never feel alone.
