I landed a job and fell in love whilst studying on my degree – Alfie from Stowmarket

Alfie Woolgar, 21, from Stowmarket studied on an Early Childhood Studies degree and got a 2:2.

He said: “I chose to study at University Studies at West Suffolk College because there are not too many places that run this degree.

“My goal is to become a primary school teacher and that is why I chose the course. It was a three-year programme and it has been good. You get to know the lecturers and there is lots of support for you.

“It (the university) is very homely. “We had plenty of time with our mentors at university so it made it feel homely and that you belonged there.

“Thanks to my course I got a job in a nursery where I had a work placement during my degree.

“Now I’ve finished the degree, I’m doing a teacher training post graduate course and also working at Mendlesham Primary School.

“The profession I’m in is very female dominated – there are only four males on the teacher training programme out of 50.

“But some students (in primary schools) don’t have a positive male role model in their family – and being that for the children is very special. It’s partly why I decided to do the course in the first place and show to other men that primary school teaching can be for them.

“Future wise, I want to get a job at a school and build up that confidence as a teacher – and eventually become a teacher trainer myself.

“I went to the ceremony with my parents and my girlfriend who I met on the course. You could say that we met and fell in love on our degree.

“It was nice – there was a feeing that ‘I did it’ and I’m the first one in my family to get a degree.”
