On the 10th December 2025 the UK Government unveiled its long-awaited National Youth Strategy, Youth Matters, this marks the first major youth policy framework in over a decade. The strategy sets out a bold vision to transform youth services across the UK, tackling youth isolation, strengthening support networks and expanding opportunities for young people.
This is a landmark moment for young people across our nation, it not only addresses their needs but was co-produced with young people. We are so proud that amongst the 14,000 young people who took part in the State of the Nation survey and consultations were students from the Eastern Education Group, ensuring that the strategy reflects lived experiences and concerns about mental wellbeing, digital safety, opportunity gaps and the need for meaningful connections.
As the report highlights ‘today’s young people are the most connected generation in history- and the most isolated’. Sadly, young people have lost access to many public places over time, resulting in them spending more time online, where social interactions can be less positive. The impact, reduced confidence in forming real world relationships and a sense of belonging. In fact, it is this sense of belonging or not having a sense of belonging that really resonates with so many young people. They also report feeling anxious about education, future careers and the impact technology and climate change have on job prospects. These issues often combine and are felt most acutely by disadvantaged or vulnerable young people, affecting their life chances and social mobility.
As the strategy points out there is no quick fix. Young people have outlined a vision for the next decade and regardless of background, a future where every young person has the skills, opportunities and connections needed to thrive. Where every young person feels empowered to shape their own lives and their own communities.
At the Pre-launch on 9th December Lisa Nandy beautifully articulated the government’s recognition and commitments not only to bringing young people into the conversation but to listening and delivering.
We at the Eastern Education Group will continue to open doors and amplify the message that youth voice matters. We will continue to back our young people, elevate their voices and help shape a future they can see themselves in.
